Advice for the IELTS speaking test - General

PART 1: SIMPLE PERSONAL QUESTIONS
- Don't give one or two words answers but also don't talk for too long.
- If you talk for too long, you tend to repeat yourself and make more mistakes.
- Keep it fairly simple.
- Try to give an extra piece of information in your answer, but stay with the subject.
   E.g.
        - Question: What food you don't like?
        - Answer: Well, I am not very keen on noodles.
They are so salty that I couldn't finish them. (extra information)

        - Question: Which do you prefer - going to a beach or going to a swimming pool?
        - Answer: Actually, I prefer going to a swimming pool because it's safer and you can usually  go all year around.
PART 2: SHORT PRESENTATION/ LONG TERM

1. Answer ALL the questions given to you on the topic card.

2. Use the same words from the questions in your answers.
E.g. Question: Where did the event take place?
Answer: The event took place ...

3. Keep an eye on the time.

4. Begin and end your talk clearly.
    E.g.
     - Begin: The movie that I find interesting is ...
     - End: That's why I choose to talk/tell you about...
5. Make short notes.

PART 3: TWO WAY DISCUSSION

This is about your opinion. There are no right or wrong answers.
Try to do the following:
1. Give your opinion.
     E.g.
            + In my opinion,...
            + I feel that ...
            + I believe that ...

2. Explain why you think/feel/believe that

3. Give examples

4. Show your full understanding by comparing the opposite opinion. This shows you have a fair/balanced opinion.
E.g. However, some people think that...

5. Finish by returning to your opinion.
     E.g. But I still think/believe/feel that ...
